Simple Resolution Bill
Jamie Raskin is a rockstar
I was thinking today about what Jamie Raskin was saying in congress today about Andy Biggs’ when he proposed a bill back in 2023 (H.R.91)which would keep things as transparent as possible in order to pass single subject matters.
I don't agree with Republicans on too many things, but I believe that Mr. Biggs was on to something. I find myself agreeing with the fact that sometimes we need to be able to pass bills without combining them with other bills.
It saves a lot of time to combine them together. However, there needs to be some form of a checkon what type of rule that will allow for specific items in a bill to be eliminated in order to pass the most important items on the bill.
The idea that putting in a bill and then adding on to it, a whole bunch of other things that aren't very important causes us to be a wheeling and dealing type of government which has its perks. But I believe that actually works against us. It causes very important things to become buried in the paperwork of multiple resolutions and getting lost.
If you're going to propose a bill, that's very important to a lot of people. If a lot of the population is affected that may have something to do with for example minimum wage. But then Congress wants also to have some kind of rule in the bill that covers something else like abortion
. Those two types of bills are two very controversial subjects. That being said, they should be single item bills in order to cover the most important things that are most consequential to the country. They should be introduced as single line item bills. If we're talking about huge swaths of money that affect every United States citizen, I think it needs to have its own separate bill.
I would be prepared to argue the fact that multiple item bills actually slows down the work of Congress even though the rebuttal to making single subject bills is that Congress won't be able to get anything done. I think this sort of action where the Republicans want one thing and the Democrats want another thing puts a lot of stalemates on bills that could be very helpful to the public and it creates a quid pro quo situation in which we then have what I would consider opportunities for more potential fraud and things that could result in people doing more illegal actions because of the scratch my back I scratch yours type of idea.
I think that single subject bills are a good idea. Let me know what you think. I'm not 100% sure on this particular idea, but I think it could be very beneficial.
Jamie Raskin when he was making his presentation said that they have not worked a full 8-hour day in a long time. His opinion was that he'd be willing to work 12 to 14 hour days if it would help to get things done.
I'm not surprised that members of Congress have not put in full 8-hour work days in a long time however, in times of crisis like we're in now, I believe it would behoove the people that work in Congress to work a full 8-hour day since they're supposed to be an example of the best of us. That's why they were voted into office.
I think the single subject bill would be a really good idea. Let me know what you think.
Love you all,
Erik
