D-Day Protest 6/6/25 Article (see previous post for video)
My visit to DC on D-day
My trip to DC started at 2:30 am on June 6th 2025. I had a flight scheduled for 5:30 am which means I had to be at the airport by 3:30. Despite the fact that I looked as tired as a cast member from The Walking Dead, I couldn’t help but feel excited to go.
I last visited the DC area back when George Bush Sr. was still in office so it’s been a minute.
As I came out of my stupor, it was certainly a challenge when I arrived in DC. I definitely felt like a tourist. When we got off the train, by dumb luck, the first building we saw was the Immigration and Naturalization building. It certainly seemed ironic considering the times we are in.
Going to the rally on the lawn in front of the Capitol Building with the Wahington Monument directly behind us was quite an amazing sight.
As we looked at the Capitol Building, both my father and I had similar thoughts. We were both thinking about the absolute terror and impossibility of what occurred on January 6th 2021. The thought that thousands of people were incited to push there way into that building. Then to desecrate that building by smearing shit on the walls and openly terrorizing and shouting that they wanted to kill members of congress. Being there just really brought into focus what an abhorrent and disgusting act that was.
To think that these insurrectionists have been pardoned for beating up and killing these police officers is equally as detestable. Make no mistake about it, some of those people are cop killers.
The protest featured a number of speakers including Kyleanne Hunter, the chief executive of Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America and a Marine Corps veteran who flew multiple combat missions as an AH1-W Super Cobra attack pilot.
Army veteran Everett Kelly, the national president of the American Federation of Government Employees who is an absolute Rockstar. He spoke with the passion and ferocity of a man who knows that what is being done by these president and congress is 100 percent wrong.
Lindsey Church, another speaker said something that is very important.
“What they do to us in public they will do to you in silence”.
This was the most important sentence that I heard while on my trip. It is a call for everyone to take action. We must not be silent. Those public displays that we see of kids being ripped from a mother’s arms or ICE agents detaining people for no particular reason except that there skin is slightly more brown is on purpose.
These disgusting displays of violence and kidnapping are done on purpose. It is being done to to instill fear so that we draw our curtains and look away. That we then hope if we stay silent and not cause trouble it might not happen to us.
This is part of the authoritarian playbook. They want you to be afraid. Don’t let them.
The more people that attend rallies and show resistance the better. If we cower in fear and hope they won’t hurt us then they have already won. Being involved is essential, it is the only way to ensure that we remain unbound. I am here for it and I hope you are too.
Love you all,
Erik

I was in DC on June 6th. I visit DC family several times per year, seeing the Capitol each time. Despite having grown up there, like you, I now cannot see the Capitol without first grieving over the events and actions of Jan 6, 2021.
All of the speakers were amazing in their own right. The sight of Sen Tammy Duckworth, a Blackhawk pilot, and now a double-amputee, and the only elected proxy on the stage, was maybe the most profound for me. She personified everything we veterans stand for. She lives her oath everyday, unafraid to speak out against tyranny.
